Indulge Yourself: An At Home Guide to the Ultimate Spa Experience

Before I became a mom, I had all the time in the world to pamper myself at home. And while I love a good spa like any other person, I liked that I could just as easily pamper myself in the comfort of my bathroom once a week- typically on a Friday when I really wanted to stay home and relax. It became a ritual of sorts and helped me both wind down from the week and refresh my energy for the weekend ahead. Since having Faith, I definitely have not had the luxury of time to enjoy my weekly treatments. But every now and then when I REALLY need it, I'll ask my husband for an hour of alone time, in which he will watch Faith so that I can recharge. 

I'm excited to share some of my favorite things to do to pamper myself and give me the best spa experience at home!  

A Guide to the Ultimate Spa Experience at Home

1. Set the mood

 Whether you're using candles or an aromatherapy diffuser (this is what I currently use), transform your bathroom into an oasis of relaxation and comfort. Play some music to get you in the right mood, bring in some tea or wine, or even some spa water (aka cucumbers in water)- whichever will help you indulge in the experience.

2. Hair Mask

This one is so easy and leaves my hair feeling incredibly soft and shiny. All you need is some coconut oil and a hair clip! I really love the triple filtered coconut oil from Trader Joe's, but any coconut oil should do it! I'll brush my hair first to remove any tangles, and take about a spoonful of coconut oil and massage it into the ends. I usually will add more coconut oil if I feel it hasn't fully saturated my hair. I try to avoid myscalp since I tend to be on the oily side, and go as far up my hair shaft as I can. Then I clip it in and leave it in for a minimum of 30 minutes, though I've kept it in for an hour or 2 while doing other chores around the house. This is when I'll do the next few steps before jumping in the shower and washing it off with some shampoo. 

3. Body Scrub

While I'm washing the coconut oil out, I like to use a good body scrub to exfoliate my skin before I soak in the tub. I recently received this as a birthday gift and I LOVE how indulgent it feels. The gentle exfoliation makes my skin so smooth, which is important in helping to prevent/fade stretch marks during my pregnancy. A cheaper alternative, and one that I use daily, is this one by Tree Hut. It's one of my favorite drugstore buys and really does the job while enhancing my shower experience.

4. facial steam

This was something I acquired recently when I wanted to up my facial game! Whenever I get a facial, the esthetician will be blowing some steam on my face as she gently cleanses it in preparation for the treatment. This really helps the treatments and masks penetrate and do their job by opening up my pores. My parents luckily gifted this one to me for Christmas and I'm absolutely in LOVE. I turn it on and use it to cleanse my face before applying my face mask. You can also use a bowl of hot water, add some flower petals or essential oils to it, hover over it with a towel over your head, and voila! You've got a fragrant steamer ready to use. 

5. DIY face mask

I discovered this DIY face mask a couple years ago, and it's hard for me to use anything else. I'm sure you've seen or heard of it before, but this Aztec Indian Clay really does an amazing job of detoxifying my skin and making it look radiant the next day and feeling super clean. It can lead to a few breakouts, but that just means it was doing its job. The label says you may feel your skin "pulsating" and it really does! To enhance this mask, I mix it with Apple Cider VInegar as well as Activated Charcoal for that added "oomph" in purging the impurities from my skin. You can't use a metal spoon in dealing with clay because it interferes with the ions in it (which make it effective), so I use a plastic spoon and a glass bowl. I apply it with a mask brush and leave it on about 20 minutes or until I feel the "pulsating".  (See steps in images below)

6. Relaxing Bath

Usually after applying my face mask, I'll prepare a nice, soothing bath. I like to use bathbombs from Lush, but this bath oil from Jo Malone is just as luxurious. Here I sink in and either close my eyes or read a few pages from my book. 

7. Body Oil and Lotion

After all my masks have been washed off, my body has been scrubbed down and soaked in some oils for a bit, I love applying body oil or lotion all over my body to retain the moisture from my "spa" experience. Again, Jo Malone is one of my favorites for this, but I'll even mix it in with some coconut body butter from Trader Joe's! 

After all has been said and done, I practically float out of my bathroom, feeling and smelling so refreshed! I hope you guys enjoyed this post! Let me know how you pamper yourself at home, I'd love to hear it!
