How I Whiten My Teeth Naturally

How I Whiten My Teeth Naturally

Every now and then, I'll be talking to someone, and in the middle of the conversation, they will cut me off and ask how I get my teeth so white! Then when I tell them, I get this blank look like "whaaaat?" So I thought I'd share with you a couple of natural remedies that have made its way around the DIY/natural news route, and have really worked for me.

I also want to preface this by saying that I do not drink a ton of coffee or tea, I don't drink soda (the occasional root beer when I want something sweet), and I drink a TON of water, which is also considered a natural teeth whitener. I also gave up soda when I was 16, and that's when people started complimenting the whiteness of my smile. That encouraged me to continue to keep my pearly whites in tact, though I did  on occasion use Crest Whitestrips which were super effective but also made my teeth super sensitive.. which is why I turned to these natural remedies. Also being pregnant, I try to stay away from as many chemicals as I can (with the exception of makeup, because #momlife).

activated charcoal

I discovered activated charcoal about 3 years ago, just before it really started becoming mainstream, and now you can find a ton of products that contain charcoal, though mostly for your skin. I was intrigued by the way it works to remove stains without causing teeth sensitivity. Mind you, activated charcoal is VERY different from the charcoal you would use for a BBQ grill, so just make sure you're using the right one! Apparently hospitals keep this around in cases of food poisoning and/or your stomach needs to get pumped. It binds with the toxins in your body and helps to expel it. This is similar to how it works on your teeth. It binds with the toxins in your mouth and teeth and leaves you with a whiter smile! The results will depend on the stains already existing on your teeth, but after a few days of brushing once a day with the charcoal, I noticed significant improvement!

There is some debate about whether it really is abrasive or not, so it's really up to you and how your experience is with it. I didn't find it abrasive at all and I felt it did the job so much better than the whitening strips could!

Though I initially started oil pulling for the health benefits, I did notice that my teeth were getting a bit whiter, the tea stains were becoming less visible. It took a while to get used to oil pulling though, I wanted to gag the first time and could only do it for about 5 minutes before I had to spit it out. Now I can do the 20 minutes that is recommended like a champ! I had read somewhere that if you combine it with activated charcoal, it's essentially like super-sizing its powers of pulling toxins and stains from your mouth and teeth, so I would end up just doing that.

Now that I don't have time to even oil pull, I'll brush my teeth with activated charcoal alone. And sometimes it does get stuck in my gums after rinsing it out, so I brush my teeth with regular toothpaste and voila! Perfect white smile! I'll usually do this a few days before a big event, like a wedding, since it does take time for it to really remove a lot of the stains, but its 30 seconds of my time before actually brushing my teeth so its not a big deal. Faith gives me the funniest looks though when I smile at her with black teeth lol.

I hope you found this insightful! Have you tried any of these techniques before? Or anything else that has worked to whiten your teeth? Let me know!

x, Maritess
